Vada pao is something which is loved by almost every Indian and mumbaikar.

It is a popular street food snack which is eaten in mumbai and rest of maharashtra.

This dish have loads of flavors and texture and it is sold in various shops, outside of colleges, school almost every corner of mumbai you will definitely get a stall or a shop of vada pao because it is very popular and people like it very much.

It is light, tastiest street food in mumbai and it is very affordable.

Vada pao basically has potato with gram flour and spices, fillings have savory, spiced mashed potatoes, while the term vada mostly means fried fritters.

From my childhood till adult, I have eat vada pao whenever we visit a shop or stall where the taste of vada pao is something delicious.

When my mother use to go anywhere for shopping or for getting something from market me and my siblings we always use to tell our mom in advance to bring vada pao because we like the dish so much.

It goes well with chai, green chilli which is fried, and chutney like coriander leaves chutney in green chutney and dry coconut chutney I think that is the best combination.

Vada pao can be eaten anytime, as morning breakfast or evening snack, You can eat according to your crave, and it is not something which feels heavy after eating if you eat in certain limitations.

So let’s make mumbai style famous vada pao at home with the goodness of dry coconut chutney and green chutney in very less time and less efforts.

  • Potato 5-6
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Mustard
  • Curry leaves
  • Garam masala
  • Turmeric
  • Green chilli
  • Red chilli powder
  • Salt
  • Coriander leaves
  • Gram flour
  • Rice flour
  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Oil for frying


  • Green coriander leaves
  • Mint leaves
  • Green chillies
  • Ginger, garlic
  • Cumin seed
  • Roasted chana dal
  • Salt
  • Coconut
  • Red chilli powder
  • Oil 1 tablespoon


  1. Wash the potatoes thoroughly in the running water.
  2. Add the potatoes in pressure cooker and cook then until 2-3 whistle.
  3. After that,remove the potato, let it cools down, peel it off and mash the potato nicely.
  4. Keep a heavy bottom pan or kadai, Add oil.
  5. Mustard, curry leaves, Chillies, grated Ginger, garlic, then add Turmeric powder, red chilli powder (flame should be low).
  6. Cook for 1-2 mins.
  7. Then add the mashed potatoes.
  8. Now add salt and give a nice stir, Add coriander leaves.
  9. Now take a mixing bowl, Add 1 cup gram flour and 3 tablespoon rice flour, pinch of baking soda, Turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt and then add water.
  10. Make a semi-thick paste (it should not be very thick as well as thin).
  11. Meanwhile Keep a pan filled with oils for frying in medium flame so that it gets hot.
  12. Now Dip the potato balls in the gram flour batter.
  13. Add the potato vada in the hot oil,cook them in medium flame both side.
  14. After 3-4 mins, remove them out in kitchen tissues.
  15. Vada is ready to serve with pao and green chutney, dry coconut chutney.
  16. Serve Hot vada pao with fried chillies and chai.
  17. Coriander leaves/green chutney.
  18. In a blender, Add cilantro, Ginger garlic, cumin seed, green chillies, salt if you want mint then add that also, add roasted chana dal and grind them making fine paste.


  1. In a kadai, Add 1 tablespoon oil, add garlic, saute for 1 mins then add grated coconut and saute them until it becomes light red.
  2. The remove them, Add this in a blender, Add salt and 1 tablespoon red chilli powder.
  3. Grind all the ingredients together.
  4. Dry coconut chutney is ready.

  • If you want to make pao at home then make it at home otherwise you can get it from bakery
  • The batter for vada should not be very thick aur thin
  • If it is thick add water and if it becomes thin add gram flour for balancing the consistency
  • Chutney is less spicy, so if you eat more spicy adjust the chilies or red chilli powder according to your taste.
